The danger of Exercise while breathing Petro-Chemical Smog


One day people in the future are going to look back on some of us who exercised outdoors with derision and contempt.

Have you ever seen persons getting exercise by bicycling, walking or jogging along busy streets filled with vehicular traffic?

Maybe you have in the past or still do that yourself? To get any benefit from the exercise the first thing you need to do is stop exercising while breathing in vehicle exhaust, especially from diesel fueled cars and trucks.

It is a generally known scientific fact, proved over the years in several studies, that what ever you breathe in will be in your blood within seconds, after all, how does Oxygen get into your blood, but by breathing? In most of these studies dealing with gas exchange through the lung membranes, it was found that persons who breathe polluted air have the highest heart disease rates. One of the studies dealt with physically fit people who exercised: those breathing polluted air as opposed to those that exercised in places away from traffic fumes. Again the same conclusion, if you are breathing exhaust fumes your arteries are being detrimentally affected within minutes, not hours or years, but minutes!

Another study I recall had a blood drawing lab set up in a van that drove along with several human test subjects running along streets filled with heavy traffic. After certain timed periods the runners were stopped and blood was drawn to be sampled and tested back at a Blood analytical Lab.

The results:

Every one of the runners had concentrations of carbon monoxide at such high levels that if they had been admitted to an emergency room and had their blood sampled there, most attending physicians would have treated them for Carbon monoxide Poisoning.

Here's the danger:

Since the test runners were at a good level of physical condition, none reported “feeling” bad at all from the running along the polluted roadways.

Yet the tests prove their blood was literally dying!

Proof that you must balance your physical training with correct knowledge and not go solely by how you “feel” or your physical appearance when determining your exercise methods and locations.

Note: Over 30% of people who drop dead of heart failure have clean arteries and “normal” cholesterol.

What part is air pollution playing in these deaths?

The U.N’s World Health Organization reports that there are probably over 800,000 or more premature deaths every year due solely to air pollution.

I live in a city that is washed almost daily with ocean sea breezes year round, though some days the pollution collects over the city with that distinct orange-yellowish haze of petro-chemical smog.

I exercise a lot outside, but always away from vehicular traffic.

When I bike I ride a circuit in a wooded park along a river, when I run it is on side streets where there is no traffic and when I walk it is generally along the beach.

I realize not everyone lives in a tropical paradise, so here is my recommendation if you live in a northern climate and or polluted city.

Make your own pure air environment in your home.

  1. Purchase an Air Cleaner for your whole house or just for the room that serves as your home Gym indoors. The purifier should use ozone and negative ions to clean the air, not just collect dust from the air.
  2. If you like to bike get a Stationary Bike and if you like to walk have a Treadmill.
  3. Use a Rebounder .If you haven’t used one yet, I highly recommend it. Anyone below 300 pounds can start using one.
  4. Use Full Spectrum Bulbs in your home gym. In my home all the lighting is FULL Spectrum lighting.What a difference it makes in how most people feel, especially in the midst of those dreary fall and winter days and nights.

The benefits of your own little pure air micro environment is that everyday regardless of rain or shine,temperature or your schedule, you can exercise breathing non-polluted air.

Exercising in polluted air is unhealthy and even deadly!

Lack of sleep may be Deadly!

What is sleep?

When you know the answer, you have power over your life.

The Alkaline Lifestyle is about balance. Sleep is an important part of your lifestyle and you can get a “good” nights sleep.



Here are some sleep principles:

1. The most important part of sleep is the hours before 12:00 midnight, your local time.

2. Optimal sleep occurs in absolute DARKNESS! No Alarm Clock LEDS, TVs left on, street lights shinning in the window or night lights. Not one pin prick of light can be allowed on your skin!

Note: Use a “Clap On,Clap Off” device to have access to instant light when necessary, such if you have children or are incontinent.

3. Pray or meditate before going to sleep. Clear your mind of all disturbing thoughts, if present, and give thanks for all the good in your life. The scriptural admonition to “forgive those who trespass against you” and “not let the sun go down on your anger” is scientifically supported.

4. Stop consumption of all food and liquids for three (3) hours before beginning your sleep. You have plenty of time, the remaining 11-12 hours of the day, to hydrate and eat.

5. Wake up to Full Spectrum Lighting fixture put on a timer to start the day of “Bright” and cheerful.

6. Use Cheerful and light music or motivational messages from a timer operated media device as an “Alarm Clock”, not some clanging nerve wracking sound.







This last Monday,September 25, 2007, a large British sleep study was released.

It tracked the sleep habits of 10,000 government workers over a period of 17 years. The study looked at sleep patterns of participants aged 35-55 years at two points in their lives:

1985-88 and

1992-93

and then tracked their mortality rates until 2004.

Its conclusions?

· People who do not get enough sleep are almost twice as likely to die from ALL causes and more than twice as likely to die of heart disease and stroke! (Read it again if you justify staying up past 12:00 midnight, while telling yourself you want to be healthy)

· Lack of sleep appeared to be linked to increased blood pressure known to raise the risk of heart attacks and stroke.

· Over 30 % of the UK population and approximately 40% of the U.S.A. population sleep less than 5 hours a night.

· The results were adjusted to remove the effects of sex,smoking, alcohol consumption, body mass index, blood pressure and out of balance cholesterol levels.

· The lead researcher stated : "In terms of prevention, our findings indicate that consistently sleeping around (7) seven hours per night is optimal for health,"

Raw Food Snacks

Nuts for You

Nuts, like seeds that are sprouted in a raw food diet, are a concentrated source of nutrition. The Alkaline Lifestyle is filled with easy, quick and nutritious foods that can be used as snacks. Nuts are one of those foods. Included in this article are recipes for making the following list of Raw Nuts taste just as good if not better as the Burnt and salted variety most of us grew up on, not knowing there was a better tasting way.

Here is a list of Nuts that are eaten Raw:

1. Almonds
2. Brazil Nuts
3. Pecans
4. Walnuts
5. Black Walnuts
6. Pine Nuts
7. Macadamia Nuts
8. Hazel Nuts
9. Sunflower Seeds
10. Coconut (one of the biggest and best)

There is a difference between foods that are called nuts in a culinary sense as opposed to being nuts in a botanical sense. This article uses the term nut in the culinary sense.

Some Principles:




  • Burn nuts, and they become more harmful than helpful to your body


  • Salted Raw nuts are Ok for most people


  • “Balance is The KEY”


  • Spice up your life, meaning try spices with your nuts (once you get into this way of snacking you might say, you’ll just go nuts!)


  • Warming nuts is OK, just don’t exceed 110 degrees, use a separate alarm Thermometer when using most home ovens as almost all modern ones have lower temperature limits that start at 150 degrees Fahrenheit. A Dehydrator is a valuable piece of Raw Food Culinary equipment.


  • CRITICAL: Rinse and soak all nuts in Ozonated water or at least in pure filtered water. To assume that nuts are ready to safely consume right from the store is dangerous, especially when feeding infants, children or persons with impaired immune systems. I have stood afar at the local Health Food Markets and watched, as people stick their hands into bulk containers, put their hand to their mouth and then back into the container ,with some of the nuts in their hand falling back into the container, after, being in contact with their mouth, before they move on to steal from another bulk container. One person I observed doing it I immediately confronted and then reported to store management because I new him to have Aids and Hepatitis. Sampling is allowed and even encouraged at most stores but not everyone follows sanitary practices. If you had seen what I have seen in how most nuts are handled from grove to market, with any good sense, you would diligently properly rinse all nuts and seeds before use.


Now the what to, and how to, part.

Almost all the nuts listed above can be ground into Nut Butters. Then smear them on your favorite wraps, crackers and vegetables.

Recipe One with Nut Butters:

Take almond butter and spread on Organic Rice cake.
Place slices of Hass Avocado on top of Almond Butter.
Sprinkle on Real Salt and or Maine Seacoast Dulse Flakes (Great source of Iodine)
Rice cake gives crunch and Almonds and Avocado give live nutrients.
Then Try eating only One! Just joking folks, discipline is part of life.

Recipe Two with Nut Butters:
Take any Nut Butter and spread on a Whole Grain Wrap
Then roll it up tight and fold the ends to seal in the Good Goo
Through a hand full of sprouts or as I prefer a hand full of Organic Greens Salad Mix drenched in Spectrum Brand Organic Olive Oil with Salt added to taste.

Recipe Three with Nut Butters:
The old stand by, Organic Celery dipped in your favorite Nut Butter, just don’t use peanut butter.(I so called “loved” peanut butter until I learned that my skin eruptions were my body’s reaction to the mold products found in almost all peanuts.)

Recipe Four with Nut Butters:
Here’s one I discovered for my taste buds. Organic Cucumber dipped in Raw Organic Sesame Tahini.The combo appeals to me. I discovered it because I was in a rush out the door and wanted to eat something really quick.The rule is experiment, just don’t experiment on other people.

Recipe One with Just Whole Nuts:
Soak hand full of Almonds overnight in a Glass bowl covered in pure water, 12 hours is a sufficient amount of time. Rinse off well and lay out on a cloth or paper towel to dry to the touch.
Place in a bowl, the one you soaked them in will do fine after being rinsed and wiped dry.
Spray with Almond Oil until moist but not dripping, Salt to taste with Real Salt and mix well and then eat.
Another version of the same is to place the nuts directly from soaking on to a cookie pan and place in an oven or Dehydrator to heat the nuts up to 110 degrees, then remove immediately, salt and spray with oil. Eat right away or store unused portion in the refrigerator for no more than a day.


”Fresh Is The KEY”

Recipe Two with Just Whole Nuts:
Just eat them as they are after rinsing and or soaking.
Not all nuts should be soaked over night. Walnuts and Pecans being the two most unsuitable to soaking and sprouting due to their soft structure.

Almonds, Hazel Nuts, and Sunflower Seeds are suitable for overnight soaking and if you examined them under a high power Magnifying Glass or a microscope you could actually see the beginning of the root emerging from the seed within 24-36 hours of soaking, if the nuts are fresh.
That is another point worth mentioning;
if you soak Almonds for at least 12 hours and they do not swell to at least twice to three times their size, then the Almonds are not fresh and or they are roasted. Many times it can be difficult to determine whether almonds have been dry roasted or blanched. Due to the high price of Organic Raw Almonds, some unscrupulous markets substitute the lower priced roasted and or blanched Almonds as the raw. My advice, if you bought Raw organic Almonds and they fail to Sprout then take them back and get a refund, regardless of what the reason may be for the Almonds not Sprouting. Many times it is because it is late in the year after the Almond harvest and the Almonds are just stale.

When going out and about for the day, simply put your nuts in a Zip lock bag or small Tupperware type container and take them with you. The Zip Locks take up less space and are disposable thus eliminating cleaning a container.

So Just Go Nuts!

Why to Own a Radiation Monitor

Radiation: the hidden and silent Killer.

One of the areas of the Alkaline Lifestyle is the environment where you live, play and work. Radiation, its sources, levels and spectrums should be a concern of yours, and nothing is as important as being able to verify that radiation is at safe levels. The earth has natural low levels of what is called background radiation, but due to man’s technology most of us are unknowingly being exposed to harmful radiation from many different sources.

This article is about Alpha, Beta and Gamma radiation, the type emitting from radioactive substances, both natural and man made.

Having taken training to become a Nuclear Fallout Shelter Radiological Monitor, I know enough about the dangers of radiation to recommend having a Geiger Counter in your home. I have found a good value in a Digital Geiger Counter that is priced below $900.00. Only until recently, the prices were twice that amount or more.
Beware of shopping by price alone among different manufacturers. Some equipment is target marketed to those who buy impulsively based on fear and cost. Those units are generally inaccurate, and in the scenarios I am about to explain ,a faulty unit could be the death of you. Geiger counters are complex pieces of electronic equipment and you basically get what you pay for. Besides the low price, another great benefit is that the modern Digital unit can sit on the shelf unused for years. The old style Bomb Shelter units required regular testing to assure accurate readings.

People many times are surprised that I use a Geiger counter in a home environmental survey and of my recommendation to purchase and have on hand a Geiger Counter in the home

An Example of why to own a Geiger Counter:
I relate to people the following true story.
A Home Environment Technician had been commissioned by a client building a new home to work with the Architects in designing it and to continually check on the construction of the house, to assure a safe and healthy home for him and his family.
The day that the family was being moved in to their new home, complete with a lot of new furniture and furnishings, the Environment Technician did one last survey through the house with his test equipment. One of the test devices was a Geiger counter.
As the Environment Technician walked into the owner’s master bedroom he noticed a stunningly beautiful master bed with granite head and foot boards containing a blue streak through the both the head and foot boards. The streak was a rich dark cobalt blue. The owner later related, that blue streak was what attracted him to that particular piece of granite in the first place. As he approached the bed the Geiger counter started clicking rapidly and eventually pegged the needle to the danger zone as he put it on the pillows where the people occupying the bed would have rested their heads. The reading was the same when placed near the foot board of the bed. That beautiful streak of Blue was natural highly Radioactive Cobalt. When the owner was summoned to the bedroom and informed of the findings, he first went into shock as he considered what would have been the consequences, if he had not had been paying for the services of the expert Environment Technician. One might conjecture what might have befallen the couple had they slept in that radioactive bed to have played out like the following:
first he and his wife would have started going bald, then headaches and then perhaps brain tumors and or cancer and then surgery ,chemo and radiation treatments to treat their cancer and then their eventual deaths.
Small minds say, who could know? People who think and have understanding, they know.
The Technician upon returning to the home the next day, found the granite head and foot boards out in the front swale, waiting to be picked up by the Granite distributor.

By the way, have you ever drank coffee or tea out of one of those beautiful dark blue ceramic coffee mugs, that are given away as promotions by so many companies?
I recall a recent news story where some one checked their mug, made in communist China, and it was radioactive, again from radioactive cobalt being used as the coloring in the glaze. Not all dark blue coffee mugs are radioactive, but how would you know? Does anyone remember the Lead on the children’s toys, the plastic compound in the pet food that sickened and killed so many pets? No one is checking these things at the USA borders, or where they are sold or where they are used. I do in my house. How about yours?

Generally when I do a Home Survey I use various test meters and kits to check the Home, so purchase of the Radiation Meter is not a necessity for checking the radiation levels in your house. My service of course is local to where I live, so it may not be available to you from me personally,unless I am consulting with you at your home and place of business.To find some one in your local area ,I suggest you use your favorite Internet search engine to find a Home Environmental Technician to conduct a home survey for you. (Make sure the service you find does use a Geiger counter as part of its test equipment!)

Where a person’s personal preference and budget allows them, I recommend purchasing one for their own personal use.

But there is another set of reasons for owning a Geiger Counter. After the terrorist dirty bomb scenario became public knowledge in America after September 11,2001, having your own Radiation Monitoring device doesn't sound so outlandish for that reason alone. We experienced Gulf coast Hurricane survivors know not to rely solely on government officials to know what actions to take before, during and after emergencies. By the way we Americans are supposed to be independent, not dependent, right? There is supposed to be a healthy balance between the representative state and the individual responsibility in all matters, but what I teach as the Alkaline Lifestyle is that individual responsibility is the default condition in the balance. If governing officials fail, no problem, I am personally prepared.

Considering a new 30” LCD High Definition capable TV now costs over $600.00 and a lot of houses have more than two or three TVs in them ,having a Radiation Monitoring device seems financially plausible, if not a requirement.
By the way, you could pay for your purchase by doing a home and office survey for all your friends and families for a fee, or split the cost among friends and family so each of you can at least have peace of mind about that part of your home environment. For example if Radon were present in dangerous levels, the Monitor will detect the radiation and further testing with a specific Radon test Kit will prove up the source. A Radon Test kit is available at almost every Hardware store across America for $50.00 or less.

For instance:
A terrorist Dirty Bomb goes off in a major city near you. The wind is blowing from that city to where you are. With your own Geiger Counter you will know when and whether you can safely go outside your home, go shopping or check the body of yourself, friends and family for radioactive contamination. This is something that is essential to know in order to survive such an event. If you were go outside to remove trash, walk the dog, fuel a generator or for any other reason after such an event with out a way of checking the radiation levels, it could be fatal or cause serious long term health problems.

Another event would be such as happened at the Nuclear power plants at Chernobyl or Three Mile Island. Fall out intensity from a radioactive event varies over a wide area due to wind patterns and weather conditions ,such as whether it is raining, snowing and or windy when the event occurs. During and after such an unfortunate event, the local officials will be overwhelmed. The government won't be able to send some one to every home to tell you whether it is safe outside of your house or in your neighborhood. Only some one with a Geiger Counter on site, such as you, the home Owner, can make that decision, If you have the equipment.
Since you won't (hopefully) be using it regularly, you just store the Geiger Counter with out the battery (a common 9 Volt type) in a safe handy place. When needed just take it down and install the battery and you are ready.

Almost every home in America has a Smoke Detector, why not a portable Radiation detector?
